Job Description:

Level I - Operating under general supervision and with oversight, an Engineer I is developing technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads assignments and projects, may interface with internal departments and external organizations, and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Level II - Operating under limited supervision, an Engineer II has an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Senior - Operating under minimal supervision and using independent initiative, Senior Engineers have comprehensive technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and mentors other engineers and engineering support staff as needed.

General job duties:

  • Plans and leads projects, assignments and technical investigations

  • Works with other departments and organizations

  • Evaluates progress and results, recommending changes in procedures

  • Exercises technical judgment in decision-making and independent action

  • Responsible for budgeting, financial accountability and timelines on small projects

  • Utilizes industry- and discipline-related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC, FERC, WECC, EPA, NESC, OSHA, FCC, etc.

EMS Engineer

  • Analyze and configure electric utility-related control systems supporting real time transmission, generation, distribution and reliability operations

  • Plans, coordinates and maintains GE Alstom Energy Management System (EMS) network model, SCADA, generation, and alarm models, CIM, ICCP measurements, and the EMS displays

  • Perform Scripting, Code Development, and Automation in support of the EMS environment

  • Ensures accurate modeling of power network for state estimation, power flow, single line diagram displays, and automatic generation control (AGC)

  • Supports the specification, standardization, design, testing, and development of the EMS to ensure that it meets changing functional requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • General to excellent knowledge of engineering principles

  • Developing specific knowledge related to discipline, utilities and their business environment.

Skills in:

  • Interdisciplinary skills

  • Effective oral and written communication

  • Advanced use of computers and software related to position.

Ability to:

  • Manage and coordinate projects; establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Work both independently and on project teams

  • Develop alternatives and work with others to evaluate their value and potential for meeting company needs

  • Analyze datasets and databases

  • Draft written and oral reports of problems, alternatives and recommendations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.

Experience:

  • Level I - Experience with in electrical, power systems, system protection, computer systems or communication engineering.

  • Level II – At least 2 years engineering experience with 2 years demonstrated in electrical, power systems, or communication engineering.

  • Senior - 6 years of related engineering experience OR 5 years of related engineering experience plus PE or advanced engineering degree, and 3 years in the area of expertise.

Prefer

  • Demonstrated experience in electrical engineering or power systems and SCADA or EMS applications and modeling.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Prefer

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) designation preferred at the levels I and II

  • Professional Engineer (PE) preferred at the senior level

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The successful candidate for this position will be required to complete scheduled compliance training and submit to periodic background investigations as mandated by NERC.

  • Must be able to work on call on a rotational basis and respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours

  • Must live or relocate to/within 40 minutes of the Operations Dispatch Facility

  • Some travel is required within the IPC service area with occasional overnight stays.
