Job Description:

The Relay Technician Apprentice ensures secure operation of the interconnected electrical power system by assisting the Relay Technicians in installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and maintaining power system monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), remedial action schemes (RAS), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.

The Relay Technician ensures secure operation of the interconnected electrical power system by installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and maintaining power system monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), remedial action schemes (RAS), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Relay Technician Apprentice:

Knowledge of:

  • Power system test equipment

  • Substation operations

  • Power flow, symmetrical components, power system fault analysis

  • Protective relays, rotating machines, transformers, capacitors, reactors, control systems, instrument transformers

  • Digital communications

  • SCADA system operation and trouble isolation.

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting circuits and systems

  • operating test equipment

  • Dobles

  • Arbiter

  • multimeters

  • CT ratio test set

  • reading schematics, AC & DC

  • basic hand tool operation (e.g., screwdrivers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.)

  • organization and time management

  • effective oral, written, and interpersonal communications. Knowledge of computer networks.

Ability to:

  • Read and understand station drawings

  • properly correct and document changes to station drawings

  • establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • work in a team environment, as well as independently and be self-motivated and flexible

  • work with a high degree of accountability

  • meet established project deadlines

  • apply established guidelines, and use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems. Expected to work increasingly independently as evaluated by the Journeyman and/or Leader.

Relay Technician:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Relay Technician Apprentice:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, AND Associates degree in electronics discipline, OR completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:

  • Two or more years work experience in a related field, such as electronics or the electric power industry in a maintenance capacity.

Relay Technician:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, AND Associates degree in electronics discipline, OR completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:

  • Five or more years work experience in the electric power industry in a maintenance capacity.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position.

  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The relay technician walks up to 200 ft. occasionally on sometimes uneven/slippery surfaces (mud, snow, ice). Lifting/carrying of up to 45 lbs. is performed for up to 200 ft. Manual dexterity tasks and gripping (up to 80 lbs. force) is required in utilizing hand tools on an occasional basis. Sustained postures are occasionally required with climbing ladders/step stools, crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, twisting, and reaching to access relays. 50% of work activities are typically performed sitting at the computer. Driving up to 1.5 hours/100 miles is necessary. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of bucket trucks are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. This job may require the performance of additional tasks assigned by company leaders or management. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Relay Technician Apprentice:

Enrollment in the IPC Relay Technician Apprenticeship Training Program.

Additional safety related training may be required.

Stands on-call on a rotational basis to provide 24-hour support under the guidance of a Relay Technician.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must live within 30 minutes of the state regional office.

Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations. Complete required Company and safety training.
